San Francisco Climbing Instructor Faces 29 Sexual Assault Charges: “Everyone Knew”
Various people in California may find it easier to sexually harass others due to their positions of trust and authority. Common examples include teachers, doctors, coaches, and so on. But while these individuals can (and do) use their positions of authority to commit sexual harassment, others can easily do the same. A particularly alarming pattern has emerged in the field of rock climbing, as numerous instructors in California have been accused of serious sexual crimes against their students. Recently, another instructor faced these allegations. What can you do if you were sexually harassed by a climbing instructor in San Francisco? Can a sexual harassment lawyer help you sue?
Established Rock Climbing Instructor Charged with 29 Sex Crimes in San Francisco
In November of 2024, Climbing magazine reported that a “longtime climber” in the Bay Area had been arrested on 29 sex crime charges – including forcible rape, sodomy, attempted sexual penetration by a foreign object, forcible oral copulation, and assault with intent to commit rape. Among these charges are nine felonies.
The allegations stem from a series of incidents that occurred between 2019 and 2023 across four counties – including San Francisco County. Three victims have come forward, claiming that this instructor used his experience and position of authority to lull them into a false sense of security. Before his arrest in Pacifica, this individual worked as an instructor at a climbing gym in San Francisco’s Presidio.
The victims say that this instructor committed his crimes during climbing trips outside of the gym. First, he would win the victims’ trust with his friendly demeanor. Usually, these were new arrivals to the city – women who didn’t have many local friends. These were also novice climbers – people who lacked the confidence to explore outdoor climbing spots on their own.
Although his 29 charges involve three separate victims, as many as ten women claim to have been sexually assaulted by this rock climbing instructor. The defendant’s employer is also in the crosshairs. Some of the victims are happy that the climbing gym investigated the allegations and ultimately decided to fire the instructor. Others believe that the gym should have made the entire climbing community aware of these incidents.
This individual was a high-profile member of the climbing community who worked with brands like Arc’teryx. It is difficult to imagine how so many sexual assaults could occur without anyone realizing what was happening. Could the gym have done more to prevent this abuse? These questions will undoubtedly be explored in the ongoing investigation.
Some say that sexual harassment is a pervasive problem in the climbing community. The fact that this arrest comes just months after the sentencing of another celebrity rock climber in California strengthens this argument.
In June of 2024, a different rock climber in California was sentenced to life in prison for a series of sexual assaults in Yosemite National Park. The 40-year-old was found guilty of two counts of aggravated sexual abuse and other charges. These charges stemmed from a single incident at the park, but many other women came forward and claimed that they had also been sexually assaulted by the defendant.
The story is eerily similar to the more recent allegations. This individual used his notoriety as a famous rock climber to lure in women before sexually assaulting them. According to various reports, these assaults were particularly violent.
While these two cases are particularly alarming for the entire climbing community, the same type of harassment could occur in virtually any other teacher-student relationship. When someone claims to be an instructor, their students inherently trust them. There is an implicit understanding that when a teacher tells you to do something, you should obey. Responsible teachers or instructors use this power responsibly, but some abuse this position of trust. If you have experienced this type of abuse personally, legal action could be possible.
