Is Chrysler Having More Dangerous Shifter Problems?

If you own a Ram heavy-duty truck between the 2009 and 2017-year models, then you need to be aware of the latest recall from Fiat Chrysler (FCA). This shifter problem could be dangerous, and it raises many questions. Here’s what you need to know.

More Dangerous Shifter Problems from Fiat Chrysler

FCA has announced a recall that includes almost 1.8 million Ram trucks. The brake-transmission shift interlock device in these trucks can fail over time due to high interior heat that can cause electrical problems. That means these trucks can slip out of park when the brake pedal is not engaged. In some circumstances, the key doesn’t have to be in the ignition for this to happen.

This latest defect affects Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 models from the 2010 to 2017 model years. Some Ram 1500 pickups model years 2009 through 2017 may also be affected as are 2011 through 2017 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs. If a Ram 3500 chassis cab weighs less than 10,000 pounds and comes from the 2016 or 2017 model years, it could also be affected.

This defect can cause rollaway crashes, and so far, FCA says it has seven injury reports and a small number of crash reports. However, the automaker has a history with deadly rollaway crashes. In 2016, Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin was fatally injured when his Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled and pinned him to the fence of his Los Angeles home. The actor’s parents continue their legal fight to make FCA a pay, and will soon have their day in court.

Many other families who fell victim to rollaway crashes caused by the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s faulty shifter design also took their grievances to court. Will the victims of the Ram truck rollaway defect do the same? Anyone caught in an accident they suspect was caused by a defective product needs to contact an attorney to find out what their rights are.
