Former Student Accuses 4th Grade Teacher of Molesting Him in the 90s

On August 3, 2026, Berkeleyside reported that a former student at LeConte Elementary School had accused a 4th grade teacher of molesting him in the 1990s. The student is now suing the Berkeley Unified School District, alleging that the computer teacher molested him on a daily basis throughout 1996 and 1997.

The school in question has since changed its name to Sylvia Mendez Elementary. Although the teacher is still alive, he was not named as a defendant in the lawsuit. Journalists reportedly reached out to him for comment, but he did not reply. The school and district stated that they were aware of the claim, but did not comment on it.

The former student stated that he was first groomed by the teacher. After gaining the victim’s trust, the teacher allegedly used the large computer monitors to hide what he was doing to the child. The student also claims that he reported the abuse to school officials, who did nothing about it.

After the allegedly ignored reports, the teacher was allowed to continue spending time with students unsupervised. He reportedly used this opportunity to molest the plaintiff again, while also taking advantage of other boys.

This latest allegation comes after a string of similar scandals across the Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD). A new law passed in California allows older students to come forward with lawsuits, having previously been barred from doing so by the statute of limitations. These lawsuits have led to numerous multi-million-dollar settlements.

This is not even the first time former LeConte students have accused staff of sexual assault. In 2022, two of these students claimed to have been sexually abused by a teacher’s aide at the elementary school. That lawsuit was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.

Former Teacher at Bay Area Christian School Sentenced to 20 Years to Life

In late July of 2026, a former teacher at El Cajon Christian School received a sentence of 20 years to life. He previously pleaded guilty to five counts of felony sex abuse, having previously faced up to 111 years. He was arrested by officers last December after detectives investigated him for sexually abusing a preteen girl. The abuse continued for years, beginning when the child was just 7 years old.

Former Students Sue Mountain View Whisman School District

On August 12, the Palo Alto Daily Post reported that two former students of the Mountain View Whisman School District were heading toward a school sexual abuse trial. The former students claim that they were abused by their teacher in what the Palo Alto Daily Post calls “one of the biggest sex abuse rings in Bay Area history.”

This abuse dates back to the 1970s, and it involves a teacher who reportedly made his abusive conduct extremely obvious. During lunch break, he allegedly had a habit of reading homosexual pornographic material while eating his sandwich. The lawsuit also claimed that a teenage boy sat in his Ford Mercury in the faculty parking lot “all day” while he taught.

The teacher also allegedly had a strategy for identifying vulnerable male students: He would ask them to fill out a questionnaire at the start of the school year, and one of the key questions was whether they had a father at home. Because of the school’s proximity to an airfield, many of the students’ fathers were serving in the military and therefore away from home. These were the boys that the teacher tended to target.

In 1974, officers arrested the teacher for running a massive child sex and pornography ring that victimized hundreds of young boys. He ran the sex ring for 10 years and was sentenced to prison in 1975.
