Deadline For Clergy Abuse Lawsuits Drawing Close
Mary Alexander is alerting survivors of clergy abuse that December 31, 2022 is the end of the current window for the statute of limitations on making claims.
Explanation
In 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law in Sacramento creating a 3-year window which gives survivors of child sexual abuse the ability to file a claim against his/her abuser and the organization which may also be responsible. The law, also known as the “Revival Law” or “Revival Window”, is set to close on December 31, 2022.
What Does This Mean For You?
In California, thousands of individuals have made claims against the Catholic Church and various dioceses and archdioceses alleging various forms of priest abuse, clergy abuse, and even school abuse. If you are interested in making past claims, the window to do so is shrinking by the day!
Do I Need A Clergy Abuse Attorney?
Having a qualified sex abuse attorney can help you navigate the legal process to obtain justice for your claim.
For example, several dioceses created Independent Compensation Programs (ICPs) to deal with these claims. The bureaucracy can be difficult to manage, but attorneys familiar with this process know how it works.
In California, six of the twelve dioceses have set up this type of settlement program. Those dioceses included:
- Archdiocese of Los Angeles
- Diocese of Fresno
- Diocese of Orange
- Diocese of San Bernardino
- Diocese of San Diego
- Diocese of Sacramento
The other diocese have not done this yet:
- Diocese of Santa Rosa
- Archdiocese of San Francisco
- Diocese of Oakland
- Diocese of Stockton
- Diocese of San Jose
- Diocese of Monterey
