Ex-UCLA Gynecologist Pleads Guilty to Sexual Assault

Ex-UCLA Gynecologist Pleads Guilty to Sexual AssaultAfter a seven-year journey through the justice system, an ex-UCLA gynecologist has finally pleaded guilty to numerous counts of sexual assault. He has been formally stripped of his medical license and will spend over a decade in prison. This story shows that when survivors encounter challenges like mistrials and overturned convictions, it is still possible to seek and achieve justice in the end. If you have been sexually abused by a gynecologist or any other healthcare provider, consider discussing your legal options with a Bay Area sexual abuse lawyer.

Former Gynecologist Remains Behind Bars After Retrial

On April 14, 2026, CBS News reported that a former UCLA gynecologist had pleaded guilty to 13 counts of sex abuse. A Superior Court Judge then sentenced him to 11 years in prison, effectively reaffirming the sentence the defendant had been serving before his conviction was overturned. This marked the end of a long, arduous journey through the justice system for five women. These victims initially accused the doctor of sexually abusing them seven years ago.

The assaults themselves occurred much earlier, with the first incidents occurring in 2011. These assaults continued until 2018, which means that some of these victims have had to wait 15 years for justice. The 13 counts were as follows: Six felony counts of sexual penetration of an unconscious victim, five felony counts of sexual battery by fraud, and two felony counts of sexually exploiting a patient.

Just a few months prior, in February, an appellate court overturned several convictions against the doctor, declaring a mistrial because of issues with the jury in the 2023 case. In this previous case, the defendant faced allegations from only two women. Although he was convicted on five counts, he was acquitted of 21 other counts. The judge also declared a mistrial on the final nine counts because of a deadlocked jury.

After this mistrial, the appellate court determined that a language barrier existed with one of the jurors, leaving no other course of action other than a retrial. It is not clear how the juror managed to become eligible for duty if their lack of English skills ultimately prevented them from carrying out their duties. This development must have caused the victims to worry whether the abuser would eventually escape justice.

UCLA Pays Out $700 Million in Settlements for the Gynecologist’s Conduct

Back in 2023, CBS News reported that the University of California, Los Angeles, had paid out $700 million to victims of the gynecologist to settle their claims. This came after countless students and patients accused the doctor of making suggestive comments, carrying out invasive exams for no reason, and engaging in other acts of clear sexual abuse.

The civil lawsuits focused not only on this abuse but also on the school’s lack of action. Plaintiffs made the argument that UCLA ignored reports of sexual abuse from patients and even intentionally tried to cover up the gynecologist’s actions. If UCLA had taken action sooner, one might argue that hundreds of victims would have been spared. The gynecologist was able to practice for 35 years.

Numerous Gynecologists Abuse Their Patients in California

This individual was not the first gynecologist to face abuse allegations in California, and he will not be the last. In 2023, PBS reported that a University of Southern California gynecologist had died from natural causes while awaiting trial for over 24 counts of sexual misconduct at the school. Hundreds of women had accused him of sexually abusing them. In connection with these allegations, USC agreed to pay out $852 million in settlements for over 700 women who alleged sexual assault.

In 2025, a prison gynecologist in California was accused of “sadistic” sexual assault on numerous female inmates at the California Institution for Women. This individual allegedly forcibly restrained women, continued exams after victims complained of pain, and made sexual comments through the so-called treatment. Many of the female inmates subsequently sued.

One of these victims says that she was pregnant during her first appointment with the gynecologist. During this interaction, the doctor penetrated her with his fingers for no apparent reason, groped her chest, and refused to stop after she complained of pain. Many women complained about abuse at the hands of this doctor, but the authorities seemingly did little to address it. Although public university students and female prison inmates have drastically different life circumstances, both are under the care of government institutions.
