Mary Alexander Featured in Re-Released Parallel Justice Podcast on Oakland Ghost Ship Warehouse Fire

SAN FRANCISCO — Mary Alexander, founder and principal of Mary Alexander & Associates, P.C., is featured in a recently re-released episode of the Parallel Justice podcast examining the devastating 2016 Ghost Ship warehouse fire in Oakland, California.

The episode, “From the Vault: The Warehouse Fire That Caused 36 Deaths,” revisits the December 2016 tragedy that claimed the lives of 36 people attending a music event at the warehouse. Mary Alexander joins Renée Williams, CEO of the National Center for Victims of Crime, to discuss the dangerous conditions and acts of negligence that made the fire preventable.

Mary represented numerous victims and families in civil litigation arising from the Ghost Ship fire. In this episode, she explains the failures that contributed to the tragedy, including unsafe electrical wiring, inadequate exits, a lack of fire-suppression systems and repeated warning signs that went unaddressed. She also discusses the civil and criminal avenues pursued by the victims’ families in their efforts to obtain accountability and justice.

The episode focuses on the important role of the civil justice system in holding individuals, property owners, institutions and other responsible parties accountable when preventable conduct results in catastrophic harm. It also honors the lives lost in the fire and the continued resilience of their families.

The episode is part of Parallel Justice, a podcast produced by the National Center for Victims of Crime that examines victims’ rights, accountability and the ways civil legal action can complement the criminal justice system.
