Teacher and Track Coach Arrested on Suspicion of Sexually Abusing a Student in 2008
On August 14, 2026, CBS News reported that a teacher and sports coach in San Mateo County had been arrested on charges of lewd or lascivious acts with a child aged 14-15. He also faced a charge of sexual penetration by force, fear, or duress. Local authorities stated that they began investigating the coach after a female victim came forward and reported an incident that occurred in 2008.
The victim told investigators that she was sexually assaulted by the defendant while he was acting as her coach. She also told the authorities that he started a sexual relationship with her one year after the attack, when she was just 16 years old. At the time of his arrest, the teacher was still acting as a cross-country and track coach at Half Moon Bay High School.
After hearing about the arrest, the school district immediately placed the teacher on leave. It is unclear whether administrators knew about the abuse or suspected it, but parents will certainly have plenty of questions to ask with this stunning revelation. The sheriff’s office has publicly urged any additional victims to come forward, and the implication is that this individual may have abused other children as well.
Basketball Coach Arrested on Suspicion of Abusing Teen Athlete
Just a few weeks earlier, another sports coach was arrested in the Bay Area for very similar allegations. ABC 7 Eyewitness News reported that the coach was working as a basketball coach in Novato before his arrest. The 57-year-old had allegedly been sexually abusing a female teenager for months, abusing his trust as a coach to groom her and take advantage of her.
Once again, local investigators urged other parents to come forward if their children also suffered abuse at the hands of this coach. Officials believe that there may have been additional victims. The defendant now faces three counts of lewd acts with a child. According to court documents, the victim was between the ages of 14 and 15 when he abused her from October of 2025 to May of 2026.
Subsequent reports indicated that the victim was not a basketball player, per se, but rather a young girl working as an “assistant” to the coach. Prosecutors allege that the coach began abusing the child after learning that her parents were away from her house, subsequently continuing this abuse across other incidents. The coach has denied any wrongdoing.
Volleyball Coach Arrested for Child Porn Possession
A few weeks before the arrest of the basketball coach, a third coach was also taken into custody by police for possession of child porn. Local authorities learned of the cybercrimes after receiving several tips from the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. Detectives then located child abuse material on the defendant’s online accounts before officers arrested him in the parking lot of Pleasanton Middle School in East Bay. He was reportedly on his way to coach youth volleyball.
Abusive Coaches Have Become Far Too Common in the Bay Area
These three individuals represent only a few examples of coaches who are clearly not fit to be anywhere near children. Earlier in 2026, another Bay Area volleyball coach was arrested for sexual assault. The victim subsequently sued the school district for failing to protect her. While the outcome of this lawsuit is not yet clear, similar cases have ended with multi-million-dollar settlements for victims.
