Numerous Vehicles Collide With Trains in the Bay Area
Vehicles seem to be crashing into trains at an alarming rate throughout the Bay Area. At first, it might seem like this type of crash should be relatively rare. After all, trains operate on tracks, while vehicles drive on roads. However, these vehicles may cross each other’s paths in many situations, especially when it comes to San Francisco’s Muni light rail system. These train cars operate side-by-side with normal road vehicles, and the likelihood of collisions is relatively high. These crashes are particularly likely when negligent, intoxicated motorists get behind the wheel – which is exactly what happened in at least one recent incident. If you or someone you love has been harmed by a San Francisco train accident, consider speaking with an experienced personal injury attorney.
Alleged Drunk Driver Crashes Tesla Into Muni Train
In March of 2025, a Muni train crash made headlines across California. The incident was allegedly caused by the driver of a Tesla, who crashed his vehicle into a Muni light rail train. The crash not only caused damage to the train, but it also reportedly “destroyed” an entire transit stop. Images from the scene show the Tesla crumpled against damaged railings.
The incident occurred at Broadway and Embarcadero, and it caused several injuries. The driver of the Tesla and the Muni operator got the worst of it, and fortunately, none of the passengers on the train were injured.
After the authorities arrived on the scene, they quickly determined that the driver of the Tesla was intoxicated. They then arrested the 39-year-old on charges of DUI causing injury. He also faces allegations of speeding and making an unlawful turn.
There is little word on how this crash actually occurred. However, the charge of “making an unlawful turn” and speeding could point to several possible scenarios. The Tesla might have made a U-turn or left-hand turn before colliding with the Muni train.
This is not the first Muni train accident, and it won’t be the last. In 2018, a similar crash injured four people in Mission Bay when a bus collided with a Muni train. In 2022, two Muni trains collided with each other, hospitalizing five individuals. In 2019, a woman was dragged by a Muni train for a considerable distance after getting her hand stuck in the door. Another 2015 incident involving a Muni train killed a teenager.
Motorcyclist Dies After Colliding With a Train in San Leandro
In similar news, a motorcyclist died after crashing into a train in San Leandro. The accident occurred around 2 PM when the biker lifted up a motorcycle crossing arm and tried to bypass it. Although several riders passed through unharmed, one was left on the tracks when an Amtrak train approached. There was no time to get clear, and the lone biker was struck and seriously injured. This biker was also carrying a passenger at the time of the accident, and this passenger was killed.
Police say that this group of bikers was about 100-strong. With such a massive crowd of bikers, this must have been a confusing incident for everyone involved. However, there is no denying that manually lifting a crossing arm to bypass a train track is an extremely dangerous decision.
In a situation like this, it may be possible for the family of the deceased passenger to sue the biker. After all, the biker knowingly bypassed the crossing arm and endangered the life of his passenger before the collision. This is a clear example of negligence, and it may eventually lead to a wrongful death lawsuit. This is not the first time Amtrak accidents have occurred in the Bay Area, and many of these incidents have involved motorcycles.
