Shocking Overpass and Bridge Accidents in San Francisco

Shocking Overpass and Bridge Accidents in San FranciscoWhile San Francisco is famous for its bridges, these elevated road sections pose unique hazards for both locals and tourists. Even an overpass a few feet off the ground has the potential to launch both vehicles and pedestrians into the air, leading to catastrophic injuries and fatalities. Over the past few weeks, the San Francisco Bay Area has witnessed a multitude of these shocking crashes and numerous people have been hurt or killed. Although San Francisco’s many bridges may be beautiful, they have the potential to cause some of the most horrific accidents imaginable. If you have experienced one of these accidents firsthand, you might consider discussing your legal options alongside personal injury attorneys in San Francisco

Drunk Driver Arrested After Pedestrian Struck on Bay Bridge

On January 14, 2024, it was reported that a pedestrian lost her life while walking on the Golden Gate Bridge – also known simply as the “Bay Bridge” by locals. At around 3 AM, a vehicle stopped in the middle of the bridge for unknown reasons. A following vehicle then slammed into its rear. The driver of this second vehicle exited, stood on the bridge, and was subsequently struck by a third vehicle. Although this pedestrian was transported to a nearby hospital, she never recovered from her injuries and subsequently passed away.

The other two drivers were both arrested on suspicion of DUI, suggesting that their intoxication was a contributing factor in the woman’s death. This accident illustrates how dangerous congestion can be on a bridge. Unlike other road sections, pedestrians cannot access the side of the road after a crash on a bridge – and they are forced to remain in the middle of the road after their vehicles become disabled. This obviously puts them at the mercy of approaching, intoxicated drivers.

Vehicle “Launched” into Apartment Building after Speeding in Overpass

You might assume that while relaxing in a third or fourth-floor apartment, you would be safe from negligent drivers. But a recent incident in San Francisco proved that this isn’t always the case. On January 15, 2024, it was reported that a vehicle was “launched” from a Highway 80 exit in downtown San Francisco. It then flew through the air and impacted a nearby apartment building. The driver was apparently speeding at the time of the accident, and she somehow survived the impact and the resulting fall back to ground level.

Apartment occupants reported hearing a loud noise, and many of them evacuated the building immediately. Police say both second and third-floor units were damaged by the collision. The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, but this incident clearly indicates the hazards associated with elevated road sections – even for those in apartments.

2023 Saw Plenty of Similar Accidents

While these accidents may seem uncommon, the truth is that they happen all the time in the San Francisco area. In March of 2023, a vehicle flew off the San Mateo bridge and tumbled 15 feet down an embankment. The vehicle finally came to a rest in a shallow body of water, and its occupant was extricated by first responders. If that body of water had been much deeper, the driver could have easily drowned, especially if they were knocked unconscious by the fall off the bridge.

March of 2023 saw a similar accident in Benicia during a period of heavy rain in the region. On March 28, police reported that a vehicle flew straight off the side of an overpass, falling a considerable distance before impacting the ground. Images of the vehicle showed its front section completely crumpled. Somehow, there were no serious injuries reported. At around the same time, a pickup truck flew off the side of a highway in East Bay.

It goes without saying that the elevated heights involved in these accidents drastically increases the risk of serious injuries. In some cases, drivers lose their lives after falling into deep water or tumbling down embankments.
